# How to Care for Original Paintings, Bronzes, and Encaustics: A Collector’s Guide

Congratulations on acquiring original artwork. Whether you’ve brought home a vibrant oil painting, a striking bronze sculpture, or a beautiful encaustic piece, you’ve made an investment in both art and culture. The good news? With thoughtful care, your artwork will maintain its beauty and value for years to come. This guide covers the essentials of protecting three distinct mediums that our artists at JG Art Gallery + Events create with such passion.

## Protecting Original Paintings: Light, Humidity, and Placement

Original paintings—whether acrylic, oil, or watercolor—need protection from environmental extremes. The most common threat is light exposure, particularly direct sunlight, which can cause pigments to fade and surfaces to yellow over time. Position your painting in a location with stable, indirect lighting. North-facing walls are ideal for this reason.

Humidity fluctuations present another challenge. Paintings respond to moisture in the air, expanding and contracting slightly with each change. This movement can eventually cause cracking in oil paint or warping in the support material. Aim for humidity levels between 40-55 percent. A simple hygrometer (humidity monitor) costs just fifteen dollars and can save your artwork. Avoid hanging paintings directly above radiators, air conditioning vents, or kitchen areas where steam and cooking oils circulate.

When displaying your work, give it breathing room. Mount it securely with appropriate hardware rated for its weight—this is worth the modest investment. Never use nails or hardware from your local hardware store without verifying it can safely support your piece’s dimensions and weight.

## Caring for Bronze Sculptures: The Power of Prevention

Bronze develops a patina—that greenish or blackish surface—over time, and this is entirely natural and desirable. Many collectors appreciate this evolving character as part of the artwork’s story. However, if you prefer to maintain the original appearance, prevention is easier than restoration.

Keep bronzes in a stable indoor environment. Outdoor placement invites accelerated oxidation and weathering. Dust your bronze gently with a soft, lint-free cloth every few months. For stubborn dust in crevices, use a soft-bristled brush. Avoid commercial polishes unless you’re specifically trying to restore shine; they can trap moisture and create problems down the line.

Temperature stability matters more for bronze than many collectors realize. Rapid temperature swings cause expansion and contraction that can stress the metal. An interior location with moderate, consistent temperatures—away from fireplaces and heating vents—is best. If your bronze sits outdoors seasonally, bring it inside during harsh weather.

## Encaustics: Handling a Unique and Delicate Medium

Encaustic paintings use heated beeswax and resin, creating luminous, distinctive artwork. They’re remarkably durable when properly cared for—ancient encaustic portraits from Egypt remain vibrant after 2,000 years—but they do have specific needs.

Temperature sensitivity is encaustic’s primary concern. These pieces can become soft in very warm environments. Never hang an encaustic near direct heat sources, fireplaces, or south-facing windows where heat buildup occurs. Ideal indoor temperatures are between 60-75 degrees Fahrenheit. Avoid subjecting encaustics to temperature swings.

As for cleaning, encaustics require minimal intervention. A gentle wipe with a soft, dry microfiber cloth is sufficient. Never use water, commercial cleaners, or solvents. If your encaustic develops surface dust, a barely dampened cloth is acceptable, but always err on the side of dry rather than damp.

“The best conservation is prevention,” a principle that applies to every medium, reminds us that thoughtful placement and environmental control prevent the need for costly restoration later.
